The Impact of External Events on Singapore is really big .

There was the Industrial Revolution where the sailing ships is replaced with the newly invented steamships.With the steamships invented,more Europeans can come to Singapore to sell their goods and purchase raw materials.this led to more ships coming to Singapore which will result in growth in trade.The Europeans and the Americans made us the port-of-call.they stopped their ships and refuel and obtain food supplies.The Asians in Singapore used steamships to transport their goods from us to other ports.This shows the position of Singapore port is important.It is in a good position to collect goods from the east and the distribution of manufactured goods from the west.Communications improved as the mails that comes with the ships arrive much more earlier and faster unlike the sailing ships that takes four to five months to send the letters.Thus a closer contact with the Britain.
Another external events was the opening of the Suez Canal.it shortened the trade route between Europe and the East.This resulted in shortened time and the cost of shipping goods were reduced cause of the savings in distance travelled and the time taken.As the time to travel to and fro is shortened and hence faster,the speed and volume of ships also increased.Thus we still maintained a role in the port-of call.Here we have a even big improvement in the port facilities,communications with Britain and a further increase in trade.
World War One was a chaotic battle.Many European countries,Britain,was involved in this battle.This major event cause people to panicked to buy foods as prices will go up rapidly.The controls of imports and exports were set by the government to bring the prices down.There was danger to our trade as the Emden appeared nearby our country.It did not attack us but it attacked the British trading ships which affected our trade.Finally,we have the Sepoy Mutiny.When the soldiers were told to travel to Hong Kong to fight the Muslims,some decided to rebel and rose up to the British together and started killing Europeans.After ten days then they were finally put down.18 died in the mutiny and 41 were shot and 126 were jailed.Although not a large number of the took part in this,it aroused the government's attention that they could not afford to be careless about Singapore's safety.This taught the government that there can be threats from inside and outside the country.
The Great Depression was the time that people suffered under the sudden economic fall.Business was bad people were losing money.It started in America and slowly spreaded to the rest of the world.This event caused the decrease in trade and business,unemployment and suffering from loss of money which they have to depend on their relatives and friends.As not to cause overpopulation being jobless,government decided to restricted the number of immigrants they can take in.Some Chinese and others unemployed people had to be sent back to their homeland.

In conclusion,the impact of External Events was great on Singapore.
